This study sought to analyze the Machado of Frei Simão tale, found in the book Contos Fluminenses, first published in 1870. In fact, Machado de Assis was a critical critic of society, showing in his narratives how relations took place in the nineteenth century. The research was based on studies of Machado's aesthetics, formed by knowledge of theorists about the narrative construction of the tale, as, for example, Moséis (2006), and emphasizing the realistic style, as can be observed in Bosi's studies. (1975, 2018), which highlights the characteristics of Machado's short story in view of social relations, also defended by Marques (2010) and Miguel-Pereira (1936). Also, the contributions of Moses (2006) were used to explain the universe of tales for the description of the literary genre. So, the short story was crossed with the circumstances revealed in the literary text and form the Machado style from the imagination and understanding of the reader to unravel the nuances of the formation of space of the character. The research is, therefore, of bibliographical and qualitative nature, whose analysis of the tale is linked to literary studies of the nineteenth century, in which the character, as Brait says (1990), is marked by a bitterness present in his soul, becoming corrupting the will to socialize with others around them, which deludes it and provokes social relations that are represented in the bourgeois society of the time.
