INSURGENT HERITAGE IN INVISIBLE TERRITORY: The case of the São Daniel Prophet Church in the Manguinhos favela

The article explores the struggle of a community for the recognition of the cultural heritage attributes of a listed building which is inserted in a peripheral territory of urban conflict. The Church of São Daniel Prophet, located in a low-income community in the city of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) - the Complexo de Manguinhos - is a project with the architectural signature of Oscar Niemeyer and has been listed at the state level since 1966 and at the municipal level since 1998. The community´s fight is to preserve its integrity in order to maintain the cult and the characteristics that seal it as a modern heritage. The study analyzes the process that culminated in its recognition as a cultural heritage, the building´s cultural significance attributed by the community of believers and the risk of losing its cultural protection. The goal is to contribute with territorial experiences of community-based movements, from the perspective of cultural heritage, inserted in a context of social vulnerability.
