O impacto das fake news na pesquisa científica: relato de experiência

Introduction: Fake news is defined as articles that are intentionally false, verifiable and that can mislead readers. Objective: To describe the impact of fake news on scientific research in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais State. Method: This is an experience report lived from October to November 2019 by researchers at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU). The area of collection of fake news reports comprises the neighborhoods participating in the research. Quantitative variables were analyzed by means of raw numbers and frequency measures, and qualitative variables through descriptions of fake news content. Results: Researchers and coordinators carried out the research, collecting biological material and interviewing the population. Some pre-communicational strategies through open TV and the internet were used to disseminate the study. On the days of collection, reports of these false news associated with the research were observed in an increasing manner, negatively impacting the progress of the study and generating a loss of R$ 5.043,96. Some residents refused to participate in the survey justified by the existence of fake news. Conclusion: Observing the intensification of fake news and losses in the project, we conclude the need to study this type of news and its impact on scientific research.
