Resumo: The objectives of this research are to analyse the effect of "boll weevil" on planted area, divided into scale effect and substitútion effect. Also to calculate economic returns to cotton exploration in the period before and after appearence of boll weevil, in the state of Ceará. The results indicated that with the presence of bóll weevil, area under cotton crop decreased and was substituted by others crops. Also a negative or very low profitability of cotton plantation is observed during the period of 1973-90, with some execptions.

Da anãlise dos resultados deduziu-se que a cotonicultura cearense vem passando por um estãgio de retrocesso, principalmente após o advento do bicudo, dadas as expressivas perdas de área para outras culturas.
