Resumo: The present study aims to address how, over the years, different intellectual conceptions have addressed the ethnic racial phenomenon in Brazil. Addressing the three fundamental aspects: nineteenth-century scientific racism, the hegemonic theory in the present day, which is the myth of racial democracy, and the structuralist conception of poverty starting with the study of the Negro. The black population in the country remains marginalized and racism is presented as one of the fundamental factors, but not the only explanatory of this reality. The thesis of Brazilian racial democracy kept the bias hidden and contributed to the blacks being seen as guilty of their peripheral economic conditions.

Abordando as três vertentes fundamentais: o racismo científico do século XIX, a teoria hegemônica na atualidade que é o mito da democracia racial e a concepção estruturalista da pobreza, a partir do estudo de raça. A população negra no país segue marginalizada e o racismo se apresenta como um dos fatores fundamentais, mas não o único explicativo desta realidade.
