NO ANO PASSADO, A “VAKINHA” GANHOU UM PONTO FIXO. DESDE ENTÃO…: A FUNCTIONALIST ANALYSIS OF TEMPORAL ADVERBIALS

This article aims to discuss about the textual-discursive functions of temporal adverbials of two types: então and adverbial phrases, also considering the impact of these functions on the articulation of sentences. From data collected in contemporary newspapers, we seek to relate the uses of então and the adverbial phrases to some principles of North American Functionalism, such as Iconicity and Marking, in addition to some principles of Grammaticalization. Methodologically, these temporal adverbials were analyzed in their contexts of use, in synchronic perspective and primarily qualitative treatment. Some convergences and divergences were identified between the patterns of use of então and the adverbial phrases, such as the type of predominant function in the use of each object analyzed. The divergences are possibly due to the fact that então does not, in its form, have substantive elements, as the adverbial phrases do.  Some discursive functions may be blocked when então is used as an adverb, such as, for example, introducing a topic.  The convergences are more relevant, since the functions of resuming a previous temporal mark, sequencing events and introducing topics are shared both by adverbial phrases and by então.  Finally, the analyses also indicates that both adverb phrases and então are important textual-discursive strategies for the continuity and progression of the text.
