THE DETERMINISM OF THE RATZELIAN MYTH AND OF THE DIOPIAN ANTI-IMPERIALISM: a necessary comparison

Resumo: Charles Darwin's natural selection, Lamarck's theories, the European imperialist race to share and conquer Africa, colonialism and the rise of ideologies of racial and ethnic superiority: this is the context in which the world finds itself during the 19th and early 20th centuries. In this sense, geography is not left out of the desire to establish itself as a useful science, by elaborating general laws and functioning as an instrument of the Nation-State. Furthermore, the simplified and even erroneous use of Ratzel's concepts and theories condemned him to be seen as a determinist, with his works being used as a strategy in the midst of a conflicted Europe, in a context of epistemological historical rivalry between France and Germany, which made ascend and establish the myth of Ratzelian Deterministic Geography. Following a contrary line, Cheick Anta Diop emerged as a determinist alternative that breaks with the imperialist character of European Determinism. This article aims to compare two Determinisms, Friedrich Ratzel's deterministic myth and Cheick Anta Diop's determinism, built in similar historical contexts. Thus, the following article starts from a bibliographical analysis of original texts by Ratzel and his commentators, in addition to readings of texts by Diop and his re-readers. Therefore, the following work was able to establish correlations between convergent and divergent points between the two authors who are very similar in explaining the ethnic-racial diversity of the world: geography.

En este sentido, la geografía no queda al margen del deseo de constituirse como una ciencia útil, elaborando leyes generales y funcionando como instrumento del Estado-Nación. Además, el uso simplificado y hasta erróneo de los conceptos y teorías de Ratzel lo condenó a ser visto como un determinista, siendo sus obras utilizadas como estrategia en medio de una Europa en conflicto, en un contexto de rivalidad histórica epistemológica entre Francia y Alemania, lo que hizo ascender y asentar el mito de la Geografía Determinista Ratzeliana. Siguiendo una línea contraria, Cheick Anta Diop surge como una alternativa determinista que rompe con el carácter imperialista del determinismo europeo. Este artículo tiene como objetivo comparar dos determinismos, el mito determinista de Friedrich Ratzel y el determinismo de Cheick Anta Diop, construidos en contextos históricos similares. Así, el siguiente artículo parte de un análisis bibliográfico de textos originales de Ratzel y sus comentaristas, además de lecturas de textos de Diop y sus relectores. Por lo tanto, el siguiente trabajo logró establecer correlaciones entre puntos convergentes y divergentes entre dos autores muy similares para explicar la diversidad étnico-racial del mundo: la geografía.Seleção natural de Charles Darwin, teorias de Lamarck, corrida imperialista europeia para partilhar e conquistar a África, colonialismo e a ascensão de ideologias de superioridade racial e étnica: é nesse contexto que se encontra o mundo durante o século XIX e início do século XX. Neste sentido, a geografia não fica de fora do desejo de se estabelecer como uma ciência útil, ao elaborar leis gerais e funcionando como um instrumento do Estado-nação. Ademais, o uso simplificado e até errôneo dos conceitos e teorias de Ratzel o condenaram a ser visto como determinista, tendo seus trabalhos utilizados como estratégia em meio a uma Europa conflituosa, em um contexto de rivalidade histórico epistemológica entre França e Alemanha, o que fez ascender e firmar o mito da geografia Determinista Ratzeliana. Seguindo uma linha contrária, Cheick Anta Diop surgiu como uma alternativa determinista que quebra com o caráter imperialista do Determinismo europeu. O presente artigo tem por objetivo comparar dois Determinismos, o mito determinista de Friedrich Ratzel e o determinismo de Cheick Anta Diop, construídos em contextos históricos similares. Deste modo, o seguinte artigo parte de uma análise bibliográfica de textos originais de Ratzel e seus comentadores, além de leituras dos textos de Diop e seus releitores. Esse artigo converge, portanto, com a importante discussão contemporânea sobre a decolonialidade do saber, isto é, revisitando e trazendo à luz autores que buscam lutar contra a colonialidade e levantar uma autonomia do saber para os países colônias, fomentando a construção de um conhecimento não europeu, que exalte os povos africanos e latino americanos como construtores de saber.
