Resumo: Recovering the memory of the Brazilian Association of Cemetery Studies (ABEC), we demonstrate the presence and the growing insertion in the institution of art historians and related areas that researches cemeteries in the country. It is known that funerary art was a subject ignored by critics until the middle of the twentieth century, where it became recorded in cemeteries by some modernist artists. The communications of researchers at ABEC seek to prioritize the survey of the iconographic representations contained in this particular space and also to justify the preservation and communication of this type of artistic heritage. An entity of an interdisciplinary character such as ABEC contributes to the understanding of modern man's feelings of love and pain in the face of death, and also the need to highlight the cemetery as a place of "lived memory."

Ao recuperar a memória da Associação Brasileira de Estudos Cemiteriais (ABEC), pretendemos demonstrar a presença e a inserção crescente na entidade de historiadores da arte ou de áreas afins que pesquisam cemitérios no país. Sabe-se que, apesar de a arte cemiterial ter sido um assunto rejeitado pela crítica até meados do século XX, tornou-se um local de registro de alguns artistas modernistas. As comunicações dos pesquisadores na ABEC buscam priorizar o levantamento das representações iconográficas contidas nesse espaço peculiar e também justificar a preservação e a recuperação desse tipo de patrimônio artístico. Uma instituição de caráter interdisciplinar como a ABEC contribui para a compreensão dos sentimentos de amor e de dor do homem moderno diante da morte e também para a necessidade de resgatar-se o cemitério como lugar de “memória-vivida”.
