Resumo: ABSTRACT: This study aimed to know the knowledge acquired by undergraduate nursing students concerning alcohol and drugs. The research was developed in 1998 at the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing. Results: most students did not remember or attend classes discussing that topic; they had never dealt with substance users; however, they correctly responded to the concepts of substance addiction, tolerance and abstinence; they expressed their opinion that the topic must be included in the nursing curriculum. Conclusion: the knowledge acquired by students is deficient with regard tocontent or to the way it is addressed once the data suggested that content was not adequately incorporated, although students were interested in the topic. La investigación fue realizada en 1998 en la Escuela de Enfermaría de Ribeirão Preto – USP. Resultados: la mayoria no se recordaba o no estuvo presente en las clases cuando se presentó el tema; nunca dió atención al dependiente químico; pero contestaron correptamente conceptos de dependencia química, tolerancia y abstinencia; afirmaron que el tema deve ser incluido en el currículo. Conclusión: el conocimiento adquirido por los alumnos presentó deficiências en los contenidos o en la forma de presentarlos, los resultados sugieren, que no fueron incorporados adecuadamente aunque los alumnos mostraron interés por el tema. TERMINOS CLAVES: Alcohol; Drogas; Enseñanza de Enfermería.O objetivo desse estudo foi apresentar o conhecimento dos alunos de graduação de enfermagem sobre álcool e drogas. Pesquisa realizada em 1998 na Escola de Enfermagem de Ribeirão Preto – USP cujos resultados mostram que a maioria não se lembrava ou aparentemente não presenciou as aulas quando o tema foi abordado; nunca atendeu dependente químico; responderam corretamente os conceitos de dependência química, tolerância e abstinência; afirmaram que o tema deve ser inserido no currículo. Conclui-se que os conhecimentos adquiridos pelos alunos apresentam deficiências nos conteúdos ou na forma de abordagem, pois os dados sugerem que não foram incorporados adequadamente, embora os alunos revelaram interesse pelo tema.
