Resumo: This dissertation intends to discuss the representation that Chico Buarque makes about the subaltern sectors in the lyrics of his songs. It can be considered that in the Brazilian music he is one of the artists on what this theme manifests itself in a more explicit way mainly in his musical production during years 60 and 70. His music during much of the military regime became quite engaged, being considered one of the main Opponents of the regime that lasted for almost 20 years in our country. In this regard, there was not only a purely political critique at that time against the restriction of freedom of expression, but also social from the point of view of the popular classes, for even though an enormous process of economic development had occurred, especially with the "economic miracle" there was at the same time an increase in the concentration of income the living conditions of the working class became worse. His songs reflect those problems during those years. Through Octávio Ianni, and his concept of "simple man", will be made an analysis of his musical work in which this theme is present. In the first chapter, a brief analysis of studies in the social sciences about music was made from classical authors such as Weber and Adorno, who study Western music, and when addressing the Brazilian context, it was verified that Brazilian popular music has Main character be influenced by the most diverse cultures. For that, the concept of MPB and its relation with musical movements like the Tropicália was discussed, emphasizing that there are divergences in its definition. The biography of Chico Buarque was briefly elaborated, and it has been verified that during a good part of his career, during these years, there was a great relationship between his personal life and the wider social context of the country. Of some songs, in which the artist put his point of view on the popular classes.

Pode se considerar que, dentro da música brasileira, ele seja um dos artistas em que essa temática se manifesta de forma mais explícita, sobretudo na sua produção musical durante os anos de 1960 e 1970. Sua música, durante boa parte do regime militar, tornou-se bastante engajada, sendo ele considerado um dos principais opositores do regime – que durou praticamente 20 anos no Brasil. Neste sentido, não existia apenas uma crítica meramente política ao momento contra a restrição da liberdade de expressão, mas também uma crítica social do ponto de vista das classes populares, pois, ainda que tenha ocorrido um enorme processo de desenvolvimento econômico, principalmente com o ‘milagre econômico’, houve, ao mesmo tempo, um aumento da concentração de renda e as condições de vida da classe trabalhadora ficaram piores. As canções de Chico Buarque refletem esses problemas durante aqueles anos. Através de Octávio Ianni, e de seu conceito de ‘homem simples’, foi feita uma análise da obra musical de Chico Buarque nas letras em que essa temática está presente. No primeiro capítulo está uma breve análise dos estudos nas Ciências Sociais sobre a música, desde autores clássicos, como Weber e Adorno, que têm como estudo a música ocidental. Sendo que, ao abordar o contexto brasileiro, verificou-se que a música popular brasileira tem, como característica principal, a de ser influenciada pelas mais diversas culturas. Para tanto, discutiu-se o conceito de MPB e sua relação com movimentos musicais como a Tropicália, ressaltando que existem divergências em sua definição. De forma breve foi elaborada a biografia de Chico Buarque, verificando-se que existe, em boa parte de sua carreira durante esses anos, uma grande relação entre sua vida pessoal e o contexto social mais amplo do País.
