Resumo: This study was carried out to verify viability of pimenta-de-macaco seeds using tetrazolic test. Seeds were evaluated in laboratory and sowed in seedlings. There was progressive failing in germination and vigour of seeds with increasing store time. After one year stored seeds were no more viable. Seeds evaluated by the vigour test showed potential viability, although in laboratory tests germination was 0.0%. Similar results in sowed seedlings indicates dormancy mechanism. A pesquisa foi realizada com o objetivo de obter informações sobre a viabilidade das sementes da pimenta-de-macaco através do teste de tetrazólio. Paralelamente aos testes, as sementes foram submetidas a germinação em laboratório e semeadas em viveiro. Observou-se uma queda progressiva no poder germinativo e no vigor das sementes na medida em que se aumentou o tempo de armazenamento até a completa inviabilidade, iniciando após o 13° (décimo terceiro) mês de armazenamento, sob condições controladas, câmara fria a 10°C e umidade relativa a 25%. O experimento mostrou que as sementes submetidas ao teste de vigor estavam potencialmente viáveis, porém, quando submetidas ao teste de germinação em laboratório, o poder germinativo encontrado foi de 0,0%, resultado similar ao obtido na semeadura em viveiro, sugerindo um mecanismo de dormência.
