Resumo: The historical research seeks to contribute to a better understanding of administrative thinking through the analysis of the use of the historical perspective of organizations in the field of administrative sciences. Breakthrough in historical and documentary research is the overcoming of the functionalist bias of organizational analysis, represented analytically by Burrell and Morgan (1979) within alternative paradigms to the functionalist. The review aims to demonstrate, from four Brazilian productions published between 2009 and 2012, the historical nature of social institutions, an aspect so relevant to the field that marked a significant change of perspective in the scenario of social research. In analyzing the selected texts, the importance of historical and documentary research strategies as praxis in the field of organizational studies and specific interdisciplinary fields, such as historical sociology, historical anthropology, cultural history and economic history, all representing disciplines which, despite the differences, seek to reconcile the understanding of the social aspect with the understanding of history.

Ponto de ruptura na pesquisa histórica e documental é a superação do viés funcionalista de análise organizacional, representadas analiticamente por Burrell e Morgan (1979) dentro de paradigmas alternativos ao funcionalista. A discussão tem como objetivo demonstrar, a partir de quatro produções brasileiras publicadas entre 2009 e 2012, a natureza histórica das instituições sociais, aspecto tão relevante para o campo que marcou uma significativa mudança de perspectiva no cenário da pesquisa social.
