Resumo: The present paper aims to explore the theoretical questions implied on Sleeping by the Mississippi, a photographic book by Alec Soth. It aims to locate these images and think the concepts involved in them, between the photographic tradition of the instant and photojournalism, and a formalism based on a mere aestheticism of the deadpan. These images question both of them and extract their potency from this breach: a place of force, which proposes an experience of questioning to the espectator.

Busca-se localizar esas imágenes, y pensar los conceptos involucrados en ellas, entre la tradición fotográfica del instante y el fotoperiodismo, y un formalismo basado en un mero esteticismo del deadpan. Así, esas imágenes cuestionarían ambas y extraerían su potencia de esa brecha: lugar de fuerza, proponiendo una experiencia cuestionante al espectador. O presente artigo tem como objetivo explorar as questões teóricas implicadas no livro Sleeping by the Mississippi, do fotógrafo Alec Soth. Busca-se localizar essas imagens e pensar os conceitos envolvidos nelas, entre a tradição fotográfica do instante e do fotojornalismo, e um formalismo baseado em um mero esteticismo do deadpan.
