Resumo: This paper presents an analysis of research funded by CNPq, in the area of information science, from 1984 to 1993. The objective is to identify the general characteristics of the research in this area: the main research institutions, researcher characteristics, research topics and methodology used. The study showed that few research projects were carried out in that period. The studies are scattered in different topics in library and information science. This fragmentation was a main finding. Empirical research strategies were employed in the majority of the studies. The results obtained are compared to similar studies carried out overseas, such as Jarvelin and Vakkari.

O objetivo do estudo é identificar as características gerais da atividade de investigação científica na ciência da informação. Por meio da análise das pesquisas foi possível apreender as principais instituições de pesquisas, o perfil dos pesquisadores, os temas investigados e as abordagens metodológicas mais utilizadas. Observam-se alguns problemas no desenvolvimento da atividade de pesquisa tais como o reduzido número de pesquisadores financiados. A fragmentação aparece como uma característica da pesquisa na área de ciência da informação e biblioteconomia. As pesquisas, como um todo, dispersaram-se não só em um universo amplo de instituições mas, também, em diversos temas de investigação científica.
