Resumo: The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the following six body weight (BW) estimation methods in Campolina (CAM) horses: A - weight tape placed at three different positions on the animal’s thorax; B - Crevat and Quetelet’s formula; C - Hall’s formula; D - Hintz and Griffiths’s table; E - Santos’s table; and F - Cintra’s formula. A total of 380 CAM horses were separated according to sex, age class, and gestational stage and evaluated. To determine their accuracy, weights measured on a scale and weight estimates of the six methods were compared by paired t-test, mean prediction error (MPE), and coefficient of determination (R²), using R software. The predictive capacity of method F was lower in the 6-12 months age class, so this formula is not indicated. The BW was overestimated compared with the actual weight by methods A (with weight tape placed in position 3) and B and underestimated by method C. Methods D and E accurately estimated BW of CAM horses. Correction factors are required to accurately estimate BW in this breed using methods B and C. Method A with the weight tape placed in position 2 is the most accurate for predicting BW, including pregnant female horses, and can, therefore, be considered the most suitable method for estimating BW of CAM horses.

Um total de 380 cavalos CAM foram separados por sexo, classe de idade e estágio gestacional e avaliados. Para determinar sua precisão, os pesos medidos em uma balança e as estimativas de peso dos seis métodos foram comparados pelo teste t pareado, erro médio de previsão (MPE) e coeficiente de determinação (R²), usando o software R. A capacidade preditiva do método F foi menor na faixa etária de 6-12 meses, portanto esta fórmula não é indicada. O PC foi superestimado em relação ao peso real pelos métodos A (com fita de peso colocada na posição 3) e B e subestimado pelo método C. Os métodos D e E estimaram com precisão o PC de cavalos CAM. Os fatores de correção são necessários para estimar com precisão o peso corporal nesta raça usando os métodos B e C. O método A com a fita de peso colocada na posição 2 é o mais preciso para prever o peso corporal, incluindo fêmeas prenhes, e pode, portanto, ser considerado o mais adequado método para estimar o PC de cavalos CAM.CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e TecnológicoFAPEMIG - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas GeraisCAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível SuperiorOutra AgênciaengUniversidade Federal de Minas GeraisUFMGBrasilVETER - ESCOLA DE VETERINARIARevista Brasileira de ZootecniaEquinoEquino - Alimentação e raçõesCampolina (Equino)Nutrição animalBreedEquineFoalNutritionPractical procedures to body weight estimation and correction factors applied to Campolina horsesProcedimentos práticos para estimativa de peso corporal e fatores de correção aplicados a cavalos da raça Campolinainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttps://www.rbz.org.br/article/practical-procedures-to-body-weight-estimation-and-correction-factors-applied-to-campolina-horses/Felipe Amorim Caetano de SouzaGlaciane Lopes TeixeiraTales Jesus FernandesFabiana Rezende MunizFabiana Oliveira CunhaSarah Laguna Conceição MeirellesJoel Augusto MunizRaquel Silva de Mouraapplication/pdfinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Institucional da UFMGinstname:Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)instacron:UFMGLICENSELicense.txtLicense.txttext/plain;
