A Guerra do Chaco no Jornal do Brasil: comentários sobre o conflito na capital brasileira (1930-1935)

This work presents how the Chaco War was seen by the daily newspaper staff of Jornal do Brasil. The Chaco War was a conflict for the northern region of the Gran Chaco between Paraguay and Bolivia that involved many interests between the years of 1932 and 1935. The Jornal do Brasil was a daily newspaper founded in 1891 at the Brazilian capital at the time, Rio de Janeiro, and published news and articles about the war. The news about the war were published in the telegrams section, where the news agencies articles were located, the main ones being Havas and United Press. The editorial did also it’s commentary and criticism about the ongoing events, maintaining the speech in favor of the immediate termination of hostilities. In the span of the three years of the conflict, the newspaper maintained its readers informed, clarifying the motives and demands of Paraguayans and Bolivians. With the great political instability in Brazil on the 1930’s, the newspaper avoided conflict with the government by limiting its criticism on the Brazilian foreign policies besides being subject to censorship of Vargas government. The goal is then to comprehend how the staff of the Jornal do Brasil contributed to the public opinion of the time through its editorial articles.
