Resumo: Introduction: Smoking is determined by the use of any tobacco product, since its consumers are more likely to develop diseases and early death due to diseases resulting from its use. In addition to the traditional forms of tobacco use, alternative forms attract attention and have increased consumption. And in this context, electronic smoking devices (DEFs) are known and consumed worldwide and have become an alternative for those who wish to continue smoking. DEFs are available in electronic cigarette (EC) model, heated cigarette, dry herb vaporizer and/or hybrid products. Objectives: To develop a review study on diseases and toxic substances associated with the use of electronic devices for smoking. Materials and Methods: A systematic review of the literature was carried out, carried out on scientific articles. The searches were carried out in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and Google school databases. Articles related to electronic cigarettes, diseases and substances associated with their use, as well as in vitro, animal and human studies were included. Scientific works whose subject did not match the theme, articles that did not correspond to the English, Spanish and Portuguese languages were excluded. Results and discussion: According to studies already carried out, the consumption of electronic cigarettes can cause several health problems. Cases of lung injury, respiratory disorders, lipoid pneumonia, pneumothorax, endothelial dysfunction, cardiovascular damage, intoxication, among others have been reported. There is evidence of toxic substances such as nicotine, vitamin E acetate, carcinogenic volatile aldehydes, metals, propylene glycol, glycerin and glycerol, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and aromatic substances, which are present in electronic devices for smoking as well as in the eliminated vapor. by the user, which is strongly linked to the development of diseases. Conclusion: It is concluded that the substances present in electronic devices for smoking have a strong impact on health, causing several diseases in man. It is necessary to invest in the dissemination of knowledge, such as advertisements and awareness programs, regarding the diseases and harmful effects caused by the use of these devices. It is also essential to create effective sanitary and governmental measures, especially with regard to illegal marketing in Brazil.
