Resumo: Self-rated health is a valid indicator that expresses the overall health of the population and has been used as a monitoring tool of perception of the general health of individuals. It is associated with many factors of human life, in sociodemographic and behavioral aspects, and morbidities. This dissertation presents three articles that discuss about the self-rated health of populations. The first two articles were based on the VIGITEL data in the Midwest region of Brazil related to the population 20 to 59 years old. The first examined the trends of selfrated health in relation to overweight from 2006 to 2012. The second examined the association between self-rated health with sociodemographic and behavioral aspects, morbidities and body mass index in the year 2012. The latter has been concern factor due its progressive increase and its association with chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular and diabetes mellitus. The third article analyzed the association of self-rated health with overweight in adults and older people in many countries, through an integrative literature review. It was found that the temporal variation of self-rated health was stable during the study period, except for the category "very poor" which increased only in the city of Cuiabá/MT. Body mass index increased progressively in all capitals of the region and the Federal District. Hypertension, diabetes, poor education, lack of work, not physical exercise, the fact of being a former smoker and high body mass index were associated with the worse self-rated health in the Midwest region. The literature of integrative review presented the poorer self-rated health associated with overweight in all studies analyzed with the exception of only one study. It was concluded that the analysis of "poor" and "very poor" self-rated health of the adult population has relevant information that point to the need for continued health promotion actions for health education and the stimulus to the practice of physical exercise, as well as intersectoral action to enable interventions in socioeconomic factors associated.
