Resumo: The elderly suffering disability caused by diseases need a network of support in order to continue feeling socially active. This study aims at characterizing the social support provided to the family caregiver who looks after an elderly dependent, in Brazil. A descriptive study with qualitative approach was conducted at the municipality of Jandaia do Sul, Paraná, Brazil. Data collection was performed through semi-structured interviews with 19 primary family caregivers. Data analysis was based on Thematic Analysis. The results show that when it comes to informal sources, the reference to grown up children was mostly used, while as formal ones Unidade Básica de Saüde, the Brazilian Basic Health Unit, and the team from Programa Saüde da FamIlia, Brazilian Pro-Family Health Program, were referred to. However, the image of Community Health Agent was the most mentioned. Thus, it is necessary to create support nets to integrate both formal and informal systems

Este estudio tuvo como objetivo caracterizar el apoyo social al cuidador familiar de la persona mayor dependiente. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo con enfoque cualitativo en el municipio de Jandaia do Sul, Paraná, Brasil. La recolección de datos se hizo a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas a 19 cuidadores familiares primarios de personas mayores dependientes. El análisis de los datos se basó en el Análisis Temático. Los resultados enseñaron que en las fuentes informales, la figura de los hifos es la que más aparece, mientras que en las formales se mencionan las Unidades Básicas de Salud y los miembros de los equipos del Programa de Salud de la Familia. La figura de los Agentes Comunitarios de Salud resulta ser la más mencionada. Se hace necesaria la formación de redes de apoyo social, que integren sistemas formales e informales.Idosos acometidos por doenças incapacitantes carecem de uma rede social de apoio para permanecerem inseridos socialmente. Este estudo objetivou caracterizar o apoio social ao cuidador familiar do idoso dependente. Foi realizado um estudo exploratório-descritivo de abordagem qualitativa no município de Jandaia do Sul, estado do Paraná. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de entrevistas semi-estruturadas com 19 cuidadores familiares primários de idosos dependentes. A análise de dados foi baseada na Análise Temática. Os resultados mostraram que, nas fontes informais, a figura dos filhos foi a mais relatada, enquanto que, nas formais, foram referidas as Unidades Básicas de Saúde e os membros das equipes do Programa Saúde da Família, sendo a figura dos Agentes Comunitários de Saúde a mais relatada.
