Resumo: The article shows the presence of foreigners and the influence of English, French and Spanish’s diplomats in Portugal at King José I’s time between 1750 and 1763. Displays the acute and ingenious English figures such the ambassadors Abraham Castres and Edward Hay, the chancellors William Pitt and Earl of Egremont, Officer James O’Hara and the famed lord Tyrawley. Discusses the decisive French personalities as the Count of Merle, Madame Pompadour, the minister Jacques O’Dunne, the foreign ministers Joachim Pierre François-Étienne-François Bernis and Choiseul. Reports the cooperative and adversarial relationship between them and the secretaries of the Portuguese king.
