Resumo: The objective of this paper is to analyze the relationship between pia-mwene, representatives of the lineages in the societies of northern Mozambique, and the Portuguese government at the end of the nineteenth century. Before the interference of the Portuguese authorities in the succession processes of the local societies, it is possible to observe the strategies used by pia-mwene to preserve the autonomy and the political legitimacy.
