Population growth has been impacting the natural environment, due to changes in land cover and land use in the expansion of agriculture and urbanization. Thus, the objective is to identify and characterize the Bonfim/Guarairas Environmental Protection Area (EPA), as to its usage and occupation, through the utilization of geotechnologies. Said EPA possesses an area superior than 42 hectares, and it is characterized as the biggest State Conservation Unit in terms of emerged area. Methodologically, the data were analyzed by means of the Bonfim-Guarairas EPA images from orbital platforms (LANDSAT), processed using the geoprocessing software QGis version 2.16 Nodebo. Two images were used regarding the dates of September 26th, 1984 and November 9th, 2016, then submitted to supervised classification processes and NDVI calculation for generating themed maps after being orthorectified. As a result, it has been possible to verify the great devastation of the green areas over the years with the analysis of the modification of the patterns of land use and occupation, and that urbanization processes and the search for a source of income and / or Subsistence activity provides significant transformations, thus highlighting the importance of a well structured environment conservation unit with some well performed monitoring and attendance.
