Resumo: The present work was elaborated from personal inquiries regarding the learning of English as a second language. In this sense, this study aimed to analyze the development of a second language in childhood in the school context, seeking to investigate the pedagogical strategies used in a bilingual school in the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, to achieve proficiency in oral communication in the second language. In order to do so, following a qualitative research methodology, an exploratory study was carried out, which consisted of observations made on the daily routine of children in the 1st and 4th year of elementary school, analyzing their behavior regarding the development of oral communication in contact with another language. The results show that the pedagogical methods and practices contribute to the learning of a second language in childhood, bringing cognitive benefits to the children, especially when they undergo the immersion program, where all instructions are given in the second language and they gradually take ownership of the language.

Para tanto, como metodologia de pesquisa qualitativa foi feito um estudo exploratório, que consistiu em observações feitas do cotidiano escolar de crianças do 1º e 4º ano do Ensino Fundamental, analisando seu comportamento no tocante ao desenvolvimento de sua comunicação oral diante do contato com outro idioma.
