Oral lichen planus (OLP) is considered an immunologically mediated disease that has two major subtypes: erosive and reticular. The strain TH17 is a CD4 + T cell subtype that may be associated with the pathogenesis of OLP. The aim of this study was to investigate the immunoreactivity of IL-17 and RORγt in the OLP types reticular and erosive. It selected 38 cases of OLP, 26 of the reticular type and 12 erosive. In one 100x magnification, the area was selected with higher immunostaining subepithelial region and thereafter an increase of 400 times, the lymphocytes were counted in 5 fields immunostained for each antibody assessed. Case of Iinflammatory Fibrous Hyperplasia were used for comparison. Statistical tests were used to evaluate the difference between the number of lymphocytes stained for IL-17 and ROR-γT according to the type of lesion. The results showed no statistically significant difference between the reticular OLP, erosive OLP and HFI regarding IL-17 immunoreactivity (p = 0.122). However, there was a statistically significant difference between OLP and HFI in the analysis of ROR-γT (p <0.001). There was no relationship between the immunoreactivity of IL-17 and the RORγT in relation to reticular and erosive type of OLP. The high IL-17 expression and especially ROR-γT in OLP indicates that Th17 response participates actively in pathogenesis of this disease.
