Resumo: This study sought to understand the feelings involved in the process of being home caregiver of a person without therapeutic possibility of cure. It is a study of exploratory and descriptive qualitative approach. Participants were seven caregivers residing in the Central neighborhood, DNER and Canon Monte in the municipality of Santa Cruz/RN. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and used to thematic content analysis. Five categories were identified: Reasons for become caregiver; Feelings of being caregiver; Difficulty faced in caregiver; Family support, social and health team to the caregiver and the preparation to become caregivers. Therefore, caring for a patient without therapeutic possibility of cure has been a task that triggers conflicting feelings. Finally, it suggests the adoption of public policies and actions to strengthen the attention and care to patients without therapeutic possibility of cure in their own homes.

Se trata de un estudio del tipo exploratorio y descriptivo, con abordaje cualitativa. Los participantes fueron siete cuidadores que residían en los barrisios Central, DNER y Cônego Monte, en el municipio de Santa Cruz / RN. Los datos fueron colectados por medío de entrevistas semi-estructuradas al passo que se utilizó al análisis de contenido temático. Se identificaron cinco categorías: Razones para convertirse cuidador; Sentimientos de ser cuidador; Dificultades enfrentadadas em ser cuidador; Apoyo de la familia, del equipo social y de la salud para el cuidador y la preparación para convertirse en cuidadores. Por lo tanto, el cuidado de un paciente sin posibilidad terapéutica de curación ha sido una tarea que provoca sentimientos contradictorios. Por último, se sugiere la adopción de políticas y acciones para fortalecer la atención y cuidado a los pacientes sin posibilidad terapéutica de curación en sus propias viviendas.Este estudo buscou compreender os sentimentos envolvidos no processo de ser cuidador domiciliar de uma pessoa fora de possibilidade terapêutica de cura. Trata-se de um estudo do tipo exploratório-descritivo com abordagem qualitativa. Participaram sete cuidadores que residiam nos bairros Centro, DNER e Cônego Monte do município de Santa Cruz/RN. Os dados foram coletados através de entrevista semi-estruturada e utilizou-se à análise de conteúdo temática. Identificaram-se cinco categorias: Motivos para tornar-se cuidador; Sentimentos em ser cuidador; Dificuldade enfrentada em ser cuidador; Suporte familiar, social e da equipe de saúde ao cuidador e O preparo para tornar-se cuidador. Portanto, cuidar de um paciente fora de possibilidade terapêutica de cura tem sido uma tarefa que desencadeia sentimentos divergentes.
