The Electric Matrix Transition in the Northeast Region: Challenges and Synergies with Variable Renewable Energy

Resumo: This article approaches the significant changes that have occurred in the electricity matrix of the Northeast Region of Brazil because of the increasing insertion of large-scale wind and solar energy generation, surpassing the installed potential of hydroelectric generation in the region. With the predominance of Variable Renewable Energies (ERV), the electrical system faces new challenges, mainly in relation to the high variability, uncontrollability, and difficult predictability of these sources, affecting the operation of the system. There has been a strong synergy between wind, solar and hydraulic renewable energy sources in recent years in the region, but the integration between these sources also changes the mode of operation of hydroelectric plants. In this context, this article searches to analyze the changes in the regional electrical matrix, discuss the challenges faced by the integration of Variable Renewable Energy and explore the synergy between wind, solar and hydraulic sources.

In this context, this article searches to analyze the changes in the regional electrical matrix, discuss the challenges faced by the integration of Variable Renewable Energy and explore the synergy between wind, solar and hydraulic sources.Este artigo aborda as significativas mudanças ocorridas na matriz elétrica da Região Nordeste do Brasil devido à crescente inserção da geração de energia eólica e solar em larga escala, superando a modalidade de geração hidroelétrica na região. Neste contexto, buscou-se analisar as mudanças na matriz elétrica regional, discutindo os desafios enfrentados pela integração de Energias Renováveis Variáveis, bem como explorou a sinergia entre as fontes eólica, solar e hidráulica. Observou-se no período de 2005 a 2013 uma redução na modalidade de geração hídrica de 95,51 % para 20,24 %, tendo em contrapartida um crescimento na geração eólica de 0,00 % para 66,55 %, bem como o crescimento da geração solar de 0,00 % para 10,28 %. Com o aumento das Energias Renováveis Variáveis (ERV), tais como: eólica e solar, o sistema elétrico tem enfrentado novos desafios, principalmente em relação à alta variabilidade, incontrolabilidade, e difícil previsibilidade dessas fontes, afetando a operação do sistema.
