Background: Heart failure is the main cause of cardiovascular hospitalization in Brazil. Considered as the common final pathway of all cardiopathies, studies on this syndrome are fundamental to their understanding. Objective: To describe the characteristics of patients with decompensated heart failure in a private hospital, a cardiological reference in Sergipe, accreditation holder level 3 (IQG – Instituto Qualisa de Gestão). Methods: Observational study with 143 patients admitted with decompensated heart failure from June / 2015 to April / 2017, using the CONGESTÃO registry data. Eligibility criteria included patients older than 18 years with confirmed diagnosis and analyzed: Sociodemographic and economic profile; etiology; cause of decompensation; hemodynamic profile; functional class; ejection fraction and cardiovascular risk factors. Results: The mean age was 72 years and standard deviation was 15.01, with 76.92% (110) of the patients over 61 and 54.55% (78) men. The hypertensive etiology was the main one (33.57%), 83.22% (119) were hypertensive and the arrhythmia was the main cause of decompensation (30.07%). Majority of white ethnic group (45.45%), complete high school (32.87%) and family income between two and five minimum salaries (30.77%). 55.10% (54) with systolic dysfunction, 74.13% (106) with hot-humid hemodynamic profile, 42.66% (61) functional class IV. Conclusion: Arrhythmia was the most frequent factor associated with decompensation. The hypertensive cause was highlighted as the main etiological factor and most of the patients were classified as NYHA IV, hot-humid clinical-hemodynamic profile and had a mean below normal ejection fraction (50%), predominantly systolic HF.
