Formalidade ou informalidade? Risco ou oportunidade para o microempreendedor individual do município de São Cristóvão/SE

This study seeks to understand what motivates the individual micro-entrepreneur in the town of São Cristóvão / SE to remain or leave the informal work sector. In order to meet this objective, the following specific objectives were established: To characterize the IME profile of São Cristóvão / SE; Identify the factors that lead the IME to become an entrepreneur; Analyze which factors are more relevant to the IME being an informal worker; Analyze what relevant factors lead the IME to leave the informality. Therefore, this research is characterized by a qualitative nature, since it seeks to know the entrepreneurial behavior from its point of view. In addition, the methodology of multiple case studies was used, which offers a greater understanding of the phenomenon studied, as it contains different perspectives on the subject. Likewise, the data collection was done through semi-structured interviews with 30 entrepreneurs selected according to the established criteria, half of them informal and the other half already formalized. The cases were analyzed individually and cross-checked, through a descriptive analysis of the content. Thus, the results showed that the predominant profile of the entrepreneur from São Cristóvão is female, married, with an age group ranging between 35 and 55 years old, with a family income between one and three minimum wages, having completed high school education, and in their majority, in the business sector. It has been found that the main factor that lead them to become entrepreneurs is the lack of employment and the need to increase their income, as well as the desire for independence and greater professional freedom. It is also noted that the lack of information is the main influencing factor for entrepreneurs to remain in the informal sector. On the other hand, it was found that the social security coverage is the main motivation for them to decide to leave the informality
