Resumo: The interest to comprehend about the mental health of deaf people has also led researchers around the world to investigate their anxiety. However, it is alleged that the literature on the subject needs further research and shows that it is limited. Brazil is a country where there is a lack of studies on the anxiety and mental health of the deaf population. Conducting research in the country would allow a greater comprehension of anxiety among deaf people, including understanding how anxious they may be, their anxiogenic factors, and how they deal with it. This research aimed to analyze and discuss the anxiety among deaf people, considering their experiences of communication and in the midst of adversities. Three studies were carried out, chapters of this dissertation. The first one was a theoretical study with objective to present and discuss the influence of communication, gender, educational aspects and characteristics of deafness on the anxiety of deaf people. In it, empirical research and conceptual aspects addressed deafness in the world and in Brazil, her influence on the anxiety and mental health of deaf people and the influence factors chosen for discussion. The second chapter, an Integrative Review (IR), had to objective to describe the researches that investigated the anxiety between deaf people in the period 2000 to 2017 in the following databases: PubMed, SCOPUS, Medline, LILACS, PePSIC and Periódicos CAPES. From the 749 resulting articles, it was possible to retrieve 13 publications dating from 2006 to 2017. The aspects described in the IR covered the country and year of publication, publication periodicals, approach and research design, characteristics of the samples, instruments, ways of collecting data and explored themes. The last chapter was carried out with a sample of 10 deaf bilateral profound students of both sex, who were fluent in Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS), whose age ranged from 18 to 24 years (M = 20.2 and SD = 1.88). This chapter aimed to analyze the narratives of profound deaf bilateral students regarding their communicational experiences, the symptoms of anxiety experienced and the coping to the adversities. Participants were interviewed and answered 12 open-ended questions about anxiety, communication, and coping. The data were analyzed by the IRaMuTeQ software by means of the Descending Hierarchical Classification (DHC), which generated 5 classes, denominated Interpersonal relations; Communication; Daily life and anxiety; Family, anxiety and everyday life; and Problems and their coping. The results contribute invaluable to the scientific community interested in understanding more about the mental health of deaf people, especially the Brazilian ones. The limitations identified in each of the studies described require further studies in Brazil. It is important that more research is conducted and that psychologists and other professionals and researchers are involved in studies and interventions around the mental health of the Brazilian deaf population. This needs to be done by ensuring the visualization of the psychological aspects of deaf people experience and the preservation of the socioanthropological perspective of deafness.
