RESUMO: Este trabalho examina a presença do espaço regional na história da literatura brasileira como um problema de fronteiras. Da usual concepção dos limites geopolíticos que dividem territórios físicos à complexa dimensão simbólica envolvida no ato de impor limites, o trânsito entre regiões geográficas e literárias no Brasil encetou percepções que apontam não só para fronteiras entre domínios nacional e estrangeiro, como também entre realidade e ficção. Esta reflexão parte de algumas considerações sobre a capacidade da literatura de fomentar percepções de mundo e analisa brevemente a postura da crítica face ao elemento regional no texto literário. Em seguida, a partir das soluções encontradas por alguns escritores para a representação dos espaços regionais e com base em discussões teóricas sobre a noção de região, busca-se demonstrar como a literatura pode ter conformado a apreciação dos espaços regionais no Brasil. História da literatura.        ABSTRACT: This essay examines the presence of regional space in Brazilian history of literature by taking it as a matter of borders. From the usual conception regarding the geopolitical limits that divide physical territories to the complex symbolic dimension relating to the act of imposing limits, the transit between geographic and literary regions in Brazil launched perspectives that not only point out borders between national and foreign domains, but also between reality and fiction. This discussion adopts, as its starting point, some reflections upon literature’s ability to encourage certain perceptions of the world. It also briefly analyses attitudes adopted by literary criticism towards the presence of regional aspects in literary texts. Then, based on alternatives found by some writers when it comes to the representation of regional spaces and on theoretical discussions about the idea of region, this paper aims at demonstrating how literature may have ruled the interpretation of regional spaces in Brazil.
