Resumo: RESUMO: O presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar as situações de construção e os desdobramentos de um tipo de personagem dentro da estrutura narrativa. Tal personagem, denominado personagem ausente, é o foco central do romance Sinuca embaixo d’água de Carol Bensimon, e nosso objeto de pesquisa. Tomando como base o citado romance, analisa-se também a produção de presença desta personagem que nunca aparece na narrativa, através da teoria de Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht em seu livro Produção de presença: o que o sentido não consegue transmitir. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Personagem ausente. Romance brasileiro. Produção de presença.        ABSTRACT: This article aims to analyze the situations of construction and developments of one  kind of character within the narrative structure. This character called missing character, is the central focus of the Carol Bensimon‟s novel Sinuca embaxo d’água, and our research object. Based on the mentioned novel also examines the production of presence of this character who never appears in the narrative, by Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht theory in his book Production of presence: what meaning cannot convey.
