Resumo: This study aims to track and discuss the critical reception of Álvares de Azevedo’s work (1831 - 1852), on Piauí’s periodical pages, between the middle XIX and early XX centuries. Based upon the commonplace which points to the notorious popularity of this romantic author, consolidated, initially, not only throughout Brazil, but also abroad, this paper seeks to relativize that impression. Based on surveys carried out on primary sources, it is taking into consideration the provincial perspective, the press development and local preferences, as well as the nuances on the appropriation forms of the romantic aesthetic developed in Brazil.

Partindo de um lugar comum que aponta para a notória popularidade desse escritor romântico, consolidada, a princípio, não apenas em todo o Brasil, mas no exterior, o artigo procura relativizar essa impressão.
