James Joyce. Monologia. Dialogia.        ABSTRACT: This article aims to analyze how Dublin is portrayed in the short stories An encounter and A painful case, from the book Dubliners (2013 [1914]), by James Joyce. The stories were chosen because they represent two different ideas over the urban space. On the one hand, the city is seen from a pessimistic point of view, while, on the other hand, the city is seen as a positive space representing freedom. To sustain this analysis we will resort the ideas of Mikhail Bakhtin (1988) and Salvatore D’Onofrio (2007). KEYWORDS: Urban space. James Joyce. Monologism. Dialogism.
