Resumo: The objective of this review article is to gather the relevant information on bone tissue and the validation and limitations of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. To this end, national and international studies indexed on the Pubmed, Lilacs and Nuteses databases were analyzed. The features discussed were: bone tissue maturation, bone tissue in different populations, the impact of intervention programs on bone tissue, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and its validation and limitations. According to data found in the literature, certain observations can be made. Bone mineral density changes during the different stages of life, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age; it can also be influenced by race, sex, genetic factors and life style in addition to by age. The importance of monitoring bone mineral density, both to good health and to social and economic aspects of society, is evident. Studies have confirmed the efficacy of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry for measuring body composition (bone, fat and muscle). However, in recent studies, although few in number, some limitations of using this equipment have been noted, which may affect its accuracy. It is therefore understood that there is a need for further studies into this subject, with the intention of defining the accuracy of this equipment.

Para tanto, foram analisados estudos nacionais e internacionais indexados no banco de dados PubMed, Lilacs e Nuteses. Os aspectos discutidos foram: maturação do tecido ósseo, tecido ósseo em diferentes populações, impacto de programas de intervenção sobre o tecido ósseo, absortometria de raio-X de dupla energia, bem como suas validações e limitações. A partir dos dados encontrados na literatura, algumas constatações podem ser realizadas. A densidade mineral óssea se modifi ca durante as diferentes fases da vida, infância, adolescência, idade adulta e terceira idade; pode ser infl uenciada, além da idade, pela etnia, sexo, fatores genéticos e estilo de vida. Fica evidente, tanto para a saúde quanto para os aspectos sociais e econômicos da sociedade, a importância do monitoramento da densidade mineral óssea. Neste sentido, vários estudos confirmam a validade da absortometria de raio-X de dupla energia para a mensuração da composição corporal (osso, gordura e músculo). No entanto, em estudos mais recentes, porém escassos, são evidenciadas algumas limitações no uso da absortometria de raio-X de dupla energia, que afetam a sua acuracidade. Desta forma, verifi ca-se a necessidade de novos estudos que tratem do assunto, com o objetivo de definir, claramente, até que ponto a utilização deste aparelho pode ser feita de forma acurada.Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.
