Songs of love and suffering:: romantic love as a belief in the construction of the university sertanejo market

Resumo: Considering the centrality of the love experience in the experience of the modern individual (Martuccelli, 2016), we seek to identify beliefs about love in the context of university sertaneja music, a strand that adds great numbers to the Brazilian phonographic market. Starting from economic sociology and the branch that has claimed the centrality of emotions to explain the functioning of a market, we seek to cross the economy and emotion, especially that of love. From the selection of 20 songs of the genre, we performed a lexicography of the lyrics and demonstrated “love” as a central category to be produced and consumed in this market. It is concluded that the belief in love generates the university sertanejo market. The analysis in three thematic axes (conquest, betrayal and termination) led us to dual beliefs in relation to love, especially the axis of betrayal, provided us with beliefs divided between sacred and profane - in which, due to the antagonism expressed in the beliefs, they are of irreconcilable experiences.

A partir da sociologia econômica e da vertente que tem reivindicado a centralidade das emoções para explicar o funcionamento de um mercado, buscamos cruzar a economia e a emoção, especialmente a do amor. A partir da seleção de 20 músicas do gênero, realizamos uma lexicografia das letras de músicas e demonstramos o “amor” como categoria central a ser produzida e consumida nesse mercado. Conclui-se que a crença do amor gere o mercado do sertanejo universitário.
