Resumo: The aim of this research is to investigate the balance point between regional separatist pretensions and the coercions of sovereign states that refuse such possibility. Thus, by means of the inductive method, a bibliographic review was made on the growth trend of regionalized political action, then it was disserted about the separatist movements that emerge in different parts of the world to, in the end, identify the role of autonomy in regional politics can exert in these movements. As a summary of the results, it’s appointed that grant autonomy to the regions in a federative way allows subnational regional movements to strengthen their self-determination through international recognition, without the regional entities seeking secession, but realizing the importance of being part of a larger sovereign State, with more bargaining power in the most diverse international aspects and with the economic and social advantages of federative relations.
