Identity and national formation: an analysis about Uruguayan nation formation studies

Over the last decades, the studies about nation and nationalism have accentuated the historical and subjective elements present in the phenomenon, constituting an extensive theoretical production, articulated and coherent, forming a wide model for analysis. In this theoretical frame, the identity analysis category is appearing as a re-occurring category. The nation and nationalism are well understood as collective feelings and meanings, socially and historically produced, being the identity that produces the coherence and unity among these feelings. In this context, this work has as an objective to analyze the presence of the identity category on studies regarding national formation. Taken as an objective by the contemporary productions of historians that have been analyzing the process of the Uruguayan nation. Beyond the evidence of the presence of the identity category, its intended to reveal the particular and relevant aspects of the concept in this work.
