Pickets and cigars: on Perlongher and Sarduy's criticisms of homosexual repression

Resumo: In this paper, I discuss the historical movements that have taken place in Argentina and Cuba, especially during the decades from 1960 to 1980, aiming to offer a further insight into the political landscape of Néstor Perlongher’s and Severo Sarduy’s literary and non-literary texts. I try to point out, in each case, how the repression of homosexuality interferes with rightwing and left-wing politics, discourses and socio-historical contexts. Comparing their writings, I highlight their blunt refusal of either the gay repression or the victimization and ghettoization trends of the homosexual community - attempts to regulate the tense relationship between desire and community.

Tento apontar, em cada caso, o modo como a repressão à homossexualidade interfere nos discursos tanto da direita quanto da esquerda, problematizando a reflexão sobre o contexto sócio-histórico.
