In this paper we analyse the materiality of the “linguistic tool” concept. Although initially formulated in the context of French studies on “grammatization” (AUROUX, 2009), this concept has undergone important shifts in Brazilian studies on the history of linguistic knowledge production, shifts produced by articulation of the History of Linguistic Ideas and Discourse Analysis. In this articulation, there has been a movement in perspective from function to the linguistic tool’s discoursive operating process. This movement allows us to consider the material existence of other tools, besides the grammar and the dictionary.
