Resumo: This work was developed using two greenhouse and two field experiments, during 2004/2005 agricultural season at the Federal University of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul state. The objective was to evaluate nitrogen loss by ammonia volatilization at different soil water content and to evaluate nitrogen fertilization efficiency with different urea application based on flooding time. The first greenhouse experiment was developed with N-urea application at different soil water status (dry, humid, saturated, and ponding water) and a treatment without nitrogen application, in a completely randomized experimental design whit four replications. The treatments were applied on 5 kg soil pots with ammonia collectors to quantify nitrogen volatilized. The second greenhouse experiment was developed with N-urea application based on flooding times (15, 10, 5, and 1 day before flooding and 1 day after flooding) and a treatment without nitrogen application, in a completely randomized experimental design with four replications. The two field experiments were developed with five different times of urea application based on flooding times (one with 7, 4, and 1 day before flooding and 1 and 3 days after flooding and another with 10, 6, and 3 days before flooding, at flooding, and 2 days after flooding) and a treatment without nitrogen application, in a randomized block design with four replications. In the second greenhouse experiment and two field experiments, green and dry matter production and nitrogen uptake were evaluated, while grain production was also evaluated in the two field experiments. The urea application on ponding water did not prevent nitrogen loss by ammonia volatilization and the first nitrogen application had higher efficiency when applied before flooding, even though the grain production was not affected by urea application time.

The urea application on ponding water did not prevent nitrogen loss by ammonia volatilization and the first nitrogen application had higher efficiency when applied before flooding, even though the grain production was not affected by urea application time.O presente trabalho foi desenvolvido a partir de dois experimentos em casade- vegetação e dois a campo, conduzidos no ano agrícola 2004/2005, na Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (RS), com o objetivo de avaliar as perdas de N por volatilização de N-NH3 em diferentes níveis de umidades do solo e a eficiência da adubação nitrogenada com uréia aplicada em diferentes épocas em relação a entrada de água na lavoura. O primeiro experimento na casa-de-vegetação foi instalado com a aplicação de N-uréia em solo com quatro níveis de umidades do solo (seco, úmido, saturado e saturado com lâmina de água) mais testemunha sem N, em delineamento completamente casualizado com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram aplicados em vasos com 5 kg de solo e a volatilização de amônia foi avaliada com o uso de coletores de N-NH3 de tipo semi-aberto estático. O segundo experimento na casa-de-vegetação foi instalado com cinco épocas de aplicação de N-uréia em relação ao início do alagamento (15, 10, 5 e 1 dia antes do alagamento e 1 dia após o alagamento) mais testemunha sem N, em delineamento completamente casualizado com quatro repetições. A campo foram instalados dois experimentos com cinco épocas de aplicação de N (um com uréia aplicada aos 7, 4 e 1 dia antes do alagamento e 1 e 3 dias após o alagamento e outro com uréia aplicada aos 10, 6 e 3 dias antes do alagamento, no dia do alagamento e 2 dias após o alagamento) mais a testemunha sem aplicação de N, utilizando delineamento em blocos ao ocaso com quatro repetições. No segundo experimento de casa-de vegetação e nos dois experimentos a campo foram realizadas avaliações de matéria verde e seca e nitrogênio acumulado, sendo que para os experimentos a campo também foi avaliada a produtividade de grãos.
