This paper aims to describe and analyze the perception of public servants and healthcare professionals of Santa Maria regarding sexual diversity. Therefore, two focus groups were conducted with professionals from three Family Health Strategy Units (FHS): one group for discussing and problematizing the theme, and the other for exchanging information and awareness based on the results of the first one. The qualitative research was analyzed using the speeches of the participants in relation to the research problem using content analysis. Analysis was done by transcription of the groups and participant observation with a field journal. This study is necessary because, despite the existence of government programs, policies, and public debates on the subject, there are still numerous obstacles to be overcome before these principles are truly put into practice. The low tolerance and violation of rights of LGBT people in healthcare reveal that homophobia is the principal obstacle for such policies to be effective. Among the results found, the lack of recognition of the LGBT population as a healthcare service user stands out. By not recognizing the subject as user of the service, proper actions and measures that aim to promote and protect the health of these users cannot be taken.
