Mental health of university students in Mozambique: experiences from a ronde conversation

Resumo: This paper presents an experience report from 2018 at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, a Mozambican public university located in the capital Maputo. This text is about a round conversation which took place with psychology students, and the aim of this activity was to discuss aspects involving mental health in the university context. Approximately 20 students of both sexes, aged between 20 and 30 years old took part of the activity, which allowed students to share aspects related to university life that impacted well-being and discomfort in the academic context. Among them, interpersonal issues stand out, especially regarding the relationship between colleagues; administrative issues; and structural problems concerning the physical environment. Positive and negative aspects were mentioned in the speeches. The round conversation technique provided greater interaction between students, stimulated empathy among colleagues, and allowed the group to elaborate new ways of solving the common problems. It also provided them to share ideas concerning relationship between students and teachers, and about the improvement of aspects related to the physical structure of the university, dues their relevance to improve well-being experiences.

Se llevó a cabo una rueda de conversación con los estudiantes del curso de psicología para abordar el tema de la salud mental en el contexto universitario. Participaron aproximadamente 20 estudiantes de ambos sexos, con edades comprendidas entre 20 y 30 años. La actividad permitió compartir ideas y experiencias relacionadas con la vida universitaria que impactaron el bienestar y la incomodidad en el entorno académico. Entre ellos, destacan los problemas interpersonales, especialmente en relación con la relación entre colegas; administrativo, que se relaciona con las reglas impuestas en las disciplinas; y estructurales, que se refieren a las condiciones físicas para la realización del trabajo académico. También se mencionaron aspectos positivos. La rueda de conversación proporcionó una mayor interacción entre los estudiantes, estimuló la empatía entre colegas y permitió la elaboración conjunta de nuevas formas de resolver problemas. Además, permitió compartir ideas sobre mejoras en la relación entre estudiantes y docentes y también aspectos relacionados con la estructura física de la universidad.Cet article présente un rapport d'expérience de 2018 à l'Université Eduardo Mondlane, une université publique du Mozambique située dans la capitale, Maputo. Une ronde de conversation a été organisée avec les étudiants du cours de psychologie afin d'aborder le thème de la santé mentale dans le contexte universitaire. Environ 20 étudiants des deux sexes âgés de 20 à 30 ans ont participé. Cette activité a permis de partager des idées et des expériences liées à la vie universitaire ayant un impact sur le bien-être et l’inconfort du milieu universitaire. Parmi eux, les questions interpersonnelles se distinguent, en particulier en ce qui concerne les relations entre collègues; administrative, qui se rapportent aux règles imposées dans les disciplines; et structurelles, qui concernent les conditions matérielles pour la réalisation du travail académique. La ronde de conversation a permis une plus grande interaction entre les étudiants, a stimulé l’empathie entre collègues et a permis l’élaboration commune de nouvelles méthodes de résolution de problèmes. En outre, cela a permis de partager des idées sur l'amélioration des relations entre étudiants et enseignants, ainsi que sur des aspects liés à la structure physique de l'université.Este artigo apresenta um relato de experiência ocorrida em 2018 na Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, uma universidade pública moçambicana localizada na capital Maputo. Realizou-se uma roda de conversa junto a estudantes do curso de psicologia com o objetivo de abordar a temática da saúde mental no contexto universitário. Participaram aproximadamente 20 estudantes de ambos os sexos, com idades variando entre 20 e 30 anos. A atividade permitiu o compartilhamento de ideias e vivências ligadas à vida universitária que impactavam o bem-estar e mal-estar no ambiente acadêmico. Dentre elas, destacam-se questões interpessoais, em especial no tocante ao relacionamento entre os colegas; administrativas, que se relacionam com as regras impostas nas disciplinas; e estruturais, que dizem respeito às condições físicas para a realização do trabalho acadêmico. Aspectos positivos e negativos foram mencionados. A roda de conversa propiciou maior interação entre estudantes, estimulou a empatia entre os colegas e permitiu elaboração conjunta de novos modos de solução dos problemas.
