Resumo: This article analyzes the current cruel treatment of the animals in Brazil and how they are treated by the society and the legislation, with the aim of demonstrating the need to expand the legal protection of the wildlife. To do so, it goes through the historical aspects that leads to the evolution and defense of the animals rights, as well as their importance and essentiality for the balance of the environment. Then, the text presents animals as sentient beings, capable of feeling pain and suffering, as well as showing the many types of cruelty attributed to them. Finally, we point out gaps that exist in the promotion of the animals rights in Brazil and propose a law capable of guaranteeing the protection of these beings
