Introduction: Cancer is a multifactorial disease of importance to public health due to its high frequency and negative impact of the disease and the treatment itself for the patient. Malnutrition is the main negative impact in Head and Neck Cancer patients, therefore preventive and early diagnosis actions are necessary in these patients. For this, tools are used for screening and/or nutritional assessment in order to diagnose malnutrition at the beginning of treatment. Objectives: To evaluate the frequency of malnutrition in patients with HNC in radiotherapy treatment, as well as to associate manual grip strength in patients with other anthropometric parameters. Methods: Thirty-eight patients diagnosed with HGS undergoing radiotherapy treatment were enrolled in a university hospital. Socioeconomic, clinical and life habits data were collected, as well as anthropometric evaluation and nutritional status classification. Results: Data show a predominance of male (60.5%), mean age of 62.11 ± 10.83 years and nasopharynx as the most frequent site (15%). The nutritional status according to the Body Mass Index presented 28.9% of malnutrition, while the Patient – Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) obtained 86.5% of moderate and severe malnutrition. The Hand Grip Strength presented an average of 14.07 ± 8.98 kgf. Regarding functional capacity, 95.65% (n = 37) were below the reference values for age and gender. No association was found between HGS and other anthropometric indicators. Conclusion: The frequency of malnutrition was high (86.5%) in patients with HNC and HGS showed no association with other anthropometric parameters.
