Objective: to analyze the influence of sociodemographic and clinical variables and the score of adhering to good practices on the occurrence of surgical site infection among patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Method: Observational, retrospective study, conducted in a university hospital of high complexity, located in the interior of Minas Gerais, Brazil, with analysis of medical records of 266 patients submitted to surgical procedures of myocardial revascularization. For data collection, an instrument containing sociodemographic, clinical and related variables related to postoperative surgical site infections was used; and the Perioperative Surgical Safety Checklist. Data were obtained from the Medical Archive Sector (SAME) and the Hospital Infection Control Center (CCIH). Descriptive, bivariate and logistic regression analyses were used for data analysis. Results: Surgical site infection occurred in 89 (33.5%) patients. Temperature outside the range between 36º and 36.5ºC (p=0.01), presence of invasive devices (p=0.05) and surgical procedures with prediction of critical events (p<0.001) were statistically significant in the occurrence of infections. Conclusion: Body temperature, presence of invasive devices and surgical procedures with prediction of critical events were significant factors for the increased risk of infection. The adoption of preventive strategies makes it possible to minimize risks of surgical site infections in cardiac surgeries, ensuring the quality of perioperative care and patient safety.
