The workload of the nursing team when caring for adult patients hospitalized with infectious diseases is influenced by factors such as disease severity, comorbidities and complications. Assessing the workload is essential to determine the number of professionals needed to provide quality assistance. The objective of the study was to evaluate the nursing workload in the infectious disease sector of a tertiary and teaching hospital, in the city of Uberlândia – Minas Gerais state, Brazil, between the years 2013 and 2022. The cluster analysis formed three blocks of specialties: 1: Rheumatology, Neurology, Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases; 2General Surgery and Traumatology and Orthopedics; 3: Gastroenterology, Gynecology and Obstetrics and Cardiology. It was possible to verify that the predominant type of care was intermediate care, followed by minimal care and high dependency care; also common in Gastroenterology, Cardiology and General Surgery. Infectious diseases patients showed intermediate care as the more prevalent. Therefore, it was observed that the workload of the nursing team in this sector is variable in time and depends on the medical specialty.
