The study of knowledge and understanding of the social world have instigated research in various areas of the representations about the different aspects of the functioning of social organization. The social knowledge is knowledge derived from social interactions and transmissions, and it is through this interaction that children begin constructing their representations of social reality. A reality that requires research in this direction is that of childcare services for children and adolescents, in which children and adolescents who have had their rights violated in the family are separated from family life through the application of protective measures. This study reaffirms the importance of listening to children and adolescents in the host situation, since the viewpoint of the public can support significant actions to strengthen the service network. Thus, the issue presented was: The type of host in Shelters Institutional offered in Viçosa has proven effective as a protective measure, considering the representation of children and adolescents on family and community living? The hypothesis guiding this study was that children and adolescents institutionalized may be with their rights to family and community living threatened due to the dynamics of functioning of the host institution that is not conducive to promoting family and community living, because of the lack effective alternatives service that allow reversing the situations that led the hosting. The general objective was to know the representations of children and adolescents included in the form of shelter Institutional Viçosa - MG, in with respect to family and community living. It was used the Clinical Method Piaget, whose instrument of data collection clinical interview consisting of basic and supplementary questions and the possibility of concrete material. The sample consisted of 13 children and adolescents aged between 7 and 17 years, institutionalized in two shelters Viçosa-MG. The qualitative analysis of the interviews shows how children and adolescents have a peculiar way of building your ideas about social reality, specifically shelter. It is verified that the culture of institutionalization still have taken precedence over policy of rebuilding and strengthening family ties. Thus, although the fundamental right to family and community living is guaranteed by the Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente (ECA), in practice this has not been effected, especially with regard to strengthening the family to overcome the difficulties that led to vulnerable situation, which continue at the mercy of selective and punctual public policies that do not guarantee their rights universally.
