This work was developed with the aim of evaluating the cost of production of dairy heifers in the region of Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais,identifying the main critical pointsof this phaseas well as the turn around time for the producer and its relation torate of return of capital.For a better analysis of the data divided into creating (lactation period) and rebuilds(from weaning to calving)this phase. We used data zootechnical and economic of 22milk producing assisted by the Program of Development of DairyFarmingin Viçosa-MG (PDPL-RV), relative to heifers calving in 2009 and 2010, with economic data corrected by the general índex price of domestic availability of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (IGP-DI) in October 2010. All statistical procedures were performed through the SAS program, adopting 0.10 as critical level of probability of type I error. Adding to there a ring food represents the main bottle neck on there placement dairy females, both in animal performance, as the cost, with a 60% stake in the total cost, approximately.During the growing period, breast-feeding accounted for 50% of this cost. As helowers the age at first child birth observed a higher cost per animal, but there is improvement in some economic indicators of the property, as productivity increases, rate of return on capital and return on invested capital more quickly.
