The technical normative standards for small landfills, recently approved in Brazil, states that, when combined factors such as permeability coefficient of the local soil, water table depth and the organic fraction of waste landfilled, the surplus water not surpassing predetermined values, the construction of the waterproofing system base can be exempted. This research aimed to evaluate the occurrence of contamination by leachates in the solid waste deposit of the city of Bugre - MG, which has been recently built according to the guidelines established by the aforementioned technical standards. Geotechnical analyzes were performed consisting of percussion soundings, infiltration tests, combined granulometry and Atterberg limits.surveys consist of percussion, infiltration tests, grading joint and Atterberg limits. There were also a gravimetric characterization of waste and water balance for the determination of water surplus. Samples were collected from soil below the waste disposal trenches at different depths for analysis of pH, total organic carbon, ammonia nitrogen, fecal coliform, total coliform, arsenic, cadmium, copper, total chromium, lead, total iron, manganese, mercury, nickel and zinc. The results were compared to the guiding values for soil quality established by current laws and norms. It is concluded, in general, that the soil quality study area was altered by the passage of the leachates, since various samples had concentrations greater than those found for the soil which had no contact with the residues and their effluents. However, the change in soil quality has not characterized the contamination of the area, since only one sample detected cadmium concentration higher than the value of Investigation established by legislation, which was not confirmed with increasing depth.
