Resumo: This paper aims at a critical review of the five pioneering studies dealing with the genetic relations of Xokléng and Kaingáng, and of both languages and the Jê family. In our analysis we tried to identify the arguments for genetic relationship still valid, as well as those which should be reassessed, either by the reorganization of data or by the inclusion of new data now available for both Kaingáng and Xokléng.
